Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors Recognize Contribution of Citizens of Portuguese Heritage
June 10 is celebrated worldwide as the Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities in the Diaspora. The California State Legislature added its voice to this celebration by passing a resolution on June 8 commemorating the event and recognizing the contributions of people of Portuguese heritage to the State of California. Subsequently, several counties have added their own recognition. The Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution on June 20 recognizing the contributions of Portuguese Americans.
The California Portuguese American Coalition led this effort to get the governments of cities, counties, and the State to recognize this day and the contributions of citizens whose ethnic roots are in Portugal. Bill Mattos spearheaded the contacts with Stanislaus County Government and made the presentation before the Board of Supervisors. A delegation from the Portuguese Education Foundation of Central California (PEFCC), PFSA, and business leaders joined Bill in this event.
